Last Sunday I did a quick trip up the river from Norwich, VT to Orford, NH, stopping at a few spots along the way. One spot was Long Wind Farm in Thetford where I bought a box of organic tomatoes.
At some of the stops I came up empty — it was still a bit early for much open water — but some places were more productive. In Norwich, opposite Patchen’s Place, I found my first of many Hooded Mergansers.
Farther along Route 5 I photographed a Red-tailed Hawk in flight.
There were a pair of Hoodies in the Pompy that I photographed before meeting Bill and Kathy at Campbell Flats and hearing about the Sandhill Crane Bill saw flying over Stevens Road.
The most productive spot was Reeds Marsh in Orford. I photographed a number of Hooded Merganser pairs.
As I was about to leave Reeds Marsh I spotted an otter far out on the ice eating a fish.
From the marsh I saw a Bald Eagle flying onto a snag, but it was too far away for a decent photo. Fortunately, I found a way to get closer. Its mate was on a nest nearby.
