Third Week of October 2018

This blog presents some of the photos I took between October 15 and 21, 2018.

It was foggy in the Upper Valley Monday. I used the soft light to take photos in Hanover Center and Lyme. In Lyme I found some iridescent clouds seen above.

Here are some photos from Hanover Center.

And here is a set from Lyme, NH.

A friend and I planned to hike to Mounts Pierce and Jackson on Tuesday.  The forecast was for temperatures in the 30s and 45-50 mph winds with gusts up to 70 mph in the area, so we postponed the hike for 6 days.  We wouldn’t have minded the temperatures at all if the wind was light.  Instead we took a much easier, lower elevation hike to Bridal Veil Falls in Franconia.  Neither of us had been there before.

We attempted to climb to the upper part of the falls seen above, but the slope of the ledge combined with wet leaves frustrated our efforts. We tried three different routes up before concluding it was just not worth the risk. So I took photos of the falls from a lower level and of the very beautiful area around the hut. Here are some of them.

On Wednesday, a friend and I headed south to Grafton, VT, hoping to find the leaves more colorful than farther north.  They weren’t, but I got some photos anyway during the morning.

That afternoon, just before the rain started, we got some photos in West Windsor and Reading.  Here are some.

Friday morning found me at the Mascoma Lakeside Park hoping for a sunrise, but the clouds and sun did not cooperate. Still that didn’t deter me from taking a few photos as seen below.

Since the morning was cloudy, I decided to take some moving water photos, partly for a photography class I am teaching.  Here are some of the photos I took of True’s Brook in Lebanon.

That afternoon there were some very colorful iridescent clouds over my home. These are fairly common, but are rarely seen since people tend not to look directly at the sun. In fact I didn’t know they were present, but I felt conditions were right, so I took a chance. This is yet another example of a digital camera being able to see more that the human eyes can.

On Saturday morning there was some color in the sky over Lake Mascoma that lasted about 5 minutes.

Wanting to get a few more moving water photos for my class, I headed to Bicknell Brook, a favorite spot of mine. Here are some of the photo I took there.

All-in-all, it was a nice foliage season.

The first day of the fourth week of October found me walking on sometimes-steep trails partly covered with ice over Mounts Pierce and Jackson. I photographed some spectacular rime ice and had gray jays eating out of my hand. Stay tuned for that blog in about a week.
