Birds from this Morning and few from last week

I joined a Mascoma Audubon group for a while at Boston Lot this morning.  It was a wonderful morning to be out, even though few birds showed themselves or came close. Still I managed to get a few with my camera.

The loudest singer was a Wood Thrush.

The only flying birds I got were Canada Geese.  They departed before the group arrived.  I started early.

A White-throated Sparrow posed nicely for us.

On the way down I got a Flycatcher, perhaps a Least.

Feeling a bit frustrated by the lack of colorful birds I headed to my favorite spot in Lebanon for orioles, yellow warblers, and warbling vireos.

The orioles obliged, and I got a female gathering nest material.

There were quite a few Yellow Warblers.

Although I saw a few warbling vireos, I did not get a photo. As a consolation prize I got an American Redstart.

But my favorite bird of the morning was one I have not had good luck photographing. I got it about a mile from my home. I drove past it, turned around, and got lucky shooting out my car window, hand-holding a heavy lens. It was a very nice Pileated woodpecker.

Home in my yard an Ovenbird came to serenade me and welcome me home. It was a great morning.

If you have gotten this far here are a few birds I photographed last week, but not in the Upper Valley.

They are, in order, Redwing, Black-tailed Godwits, Black-tailed Godwit, Red-necked Phalarope, Black-headed Gull, and Whooper Swan.  Where from?  Iceland.  Over the next month I’ll be posting more birds from this amazing place on my blog. You can subscribe to it if you wish at the top right of this page.
