Reading, West Windsor, and Pomfret Photo Tour

A friend and I toured Reading, West Windsor, and Pomfret, Vermont October 6, 2015.  Foliage was late, so we were early, but we had a good time nonetheless. He is new to the area, and I was showing him some classic spots — both well-known ones and a few others I like.

We started at the Jenne Farm because this is the iconic fall spot.  I much prefer to find my own photos than to photograph scenes that many others travel to capture. I certainly didn’t need any more photos of the Jenne Farm, but the experience of observing photographers from all over the world makes this spot interesting.  It was a weekday so there were only about 30 photographers at the peak.

Most of the photographers set up, fiddled with their cameras, and waited for the sun to hit the farm buildings. My favorite shot of the farm this morning is seen above. It was taken a full 40 minutes before the sun reached the buildings.

Mostly I photographed the photographers. One shot is below. If you click it or click HERE you will be taken to a panorama that shows an overview of the scene — the farm, a nearby farm, the fields, the cows, and most of the photographers.

We wandered through some back roads of Reading. The sun hadn’t hit the sugarhouse when we arrived, and that was fine with me.  Near the top of the hill a photographer asked if the sun had reached it yet. I guess that was the shot he wanted.

The early sun streamed through the birch and a duck swam in colorful reflections.

We followed back roads to West Windsor.

Coffee at the Brownsville country store was followed by some moving water photography.

Heading north to Pomfret we stopped at another icon. I took the classic vertical shot looking down the driveway at the barn, but the horizontal shows the huge barn behind the house built to shelter Aerosmith’s tour bus.

I suspect most people don’t bother with the farm next door, but I find it interesting. I’ve been to a maple sugar party there. If you click the image below or HERE you will get to a version that you can zoom into and explore.

Quite a few years ago I photographed Raymond’s Farm in Pomfret at sunset. The photo below was used on a magazine cover.

I visited Raymond’s sugar house with a good friend who lived just up the hill one spring. The sugar house was very “rustic” but the quality of his product was widely known. While I was there a man arrived from mid-coast Maine.  He made the trip just buy some of Raymond’s maple syrup.  Raymond has since passed away, and his sugar house is no longer active.

Also in Pomfret is a favorite spot with an old farm, some beautiful fields, and country roads leading in three directions. Here is one of the roads. The orange glow in the distant is from a fantastic tree near a small stream cutting through the field.

Here is that tree. We both took many photos of it.

The barns at this peaceful and beautiful spot were well used but well kept.
