Great Crested Flycatcher

Heading north on NH 114 in Sutton toward Muster Field Farm yesterday to get some just-picked shell peas, we had just passed Blaisdell Lake and Russell Pond when Jann said she saw a flycatcher-like bird sitting in a short snag very near the road. Although I figured it would be gone by the time we turned around, I went back anyway. When we slowly drove by, it had been joined by its mate. They looked like Great Crested Flycatchers, my favorite flycatcher, so I again turned around and found a place to pull off the road. By then they had disappeared. But I set up my camera and tripod anyway and carefully placed them just off the road being mindful of the lush poison ivy.

A short time later I spotted them. They stayed in the area, but never did return to the snag where they would have made for a great photo because of the direction of the light and the absence of nearby background clutter. Still I was able to get some photos of these beautiful birds.
