Eagle on Sunapee

Dick reported seeing an eagle on an island in Lake Sunapee a few days ago. I knew Chris Martin, the raptor expert at NH Audubon, would be interested. I had been with him twice before photographing his banding of peregrine falcons chicks in Lyme, NH. So I contacted him and we scanned about half of the shoreline of Lake Sunapee in a small boat early this morning in vain. As we were saying our goodbyes at Blodgett Landing he pointed over my head at an eagle flying toward us. It flew out of sight behind a point, but we soon found it sitting in a large pine.

It was constantly harassed by crows and finally it flew – over the trees and out of sight again. The photo at the right shows it taking off with two crows above it.

Pressing our luck we searched and found it again, in a different tree not too far away. There it sat and sat, mostly ignoring a crow that sat above it.

Much earlier that morning there was a group of loon cruising the big part of the lake enjoying the quite nice sunrise. Here are some more photos from this morning.
