While deep in the Connecticut River Valley there was ordinary snow mixed with rain, up 1000 feet higher in the hills of Etna we had freezing rain topped with snow. And it persists this Valentine’s Day. Mount Ascutney is seen at the left in the photo above.
To the right is a photo taken along my driveway around noon today.
Below are two views across the valley into Vermont taken in the early morning light. The first shows Okemo Mountain.

The photo below shows the Omni-directional Beacon on Hayes Hill guiding planes into the airport. Gillette Hill in Hartford is on the right center edge of the photo.

Snow and ice can make nice patterns in both flat and contrasty light.
We have had some Red-breasted Nuthatches around this winter. I still remember wondering about this funny looking “chickadee” years ago.

This (real) chickadee braved the ice and snow.

But this one apparently got hit in the head by a “snowball” just as I took its photo. Perhaps it was shed from a tree branch.

A favorite bird is the Tufted Titmouse. I have heard them calling for “peter peter peter” numerous times in the last few weeks.
This year we have had an unusually large number of American Goldfinch around our home devouring sunflower seeds.
All of the photos in the Blog were taken with a Sony RX10 IV — a great carry-everywhere camera for casual shooting.
