Eagles Nest Hike

Lee Carvalho led a baker’s dozen of hikers to a relatively unknown small peak in Danbury named Eagles Nest. We met in North Wilmot, and the beginning of the hike was in that town. While waiting for the group to assemble, a Great Blue Heron flew up and landed not far away in the bog.

We carpooled to the start point of our hike near the corner of Hobbs Hill Road and North Wilmot Road.

We hiked Hobbs Hill Road to Stewart Road and then took an unmarked trail to the right just across a bridge. After some climbing we reached a very impressive overhang below Eagles Nest.

Gerry commented on a small tree growing out of the rock almost zen-like.

I glanced at a steep passage and concluded that it was not the way up.

Soon we were going to backtrack just a bit to get the real trail.

We scrambled up the steep trail to a vast overlook of forest and even more forest to the west. It was a nice view, but it makes a boring photo. A few of us climbed farther to get a view of Mount Kearsarge seen at the far left in the photo below.

We also found the area where rock climbers practice their craft. The left side of this photo shows a bit of the vast area of the Gile State Forest to the west.

Since we were very close to the beautiful North Wilmot Church, I headed there after our hike to get a photo.

Here is the what the church looks like in winter. This photo was used on a cover of Kearsarge magazine, a fine publication.

It was a great way to spend a great morning.
