Sunday, shortly after noon in central NH, I spent some time watching a Great Blue Heron along the far shore of a wetland, hoping it would head for a nest that was much closer to me. Eventually it launched but flew to the top of a tall tree farther away.

After a a few minutes it started making strange movements and then flew to cluster of small nearby trees to join its mate who just arrived. They stayed together for less than a minute before the first heron took off and flew to the nest.

I photographed it on the nest for a few minutes, noticing that the second heron had departed. The first heron only spent about 3 minutes on the nest before it also flew off.

Here is a sequence of the heron landing on the nest.
