Sunapee Harbor — fog, falls, and people

Moving water has always been a favorite of mine. Fog and backlight also have a strong pull when I have a camera in my hands. Combine them all and throw in a few people for subjects and what could be better? Fall foliage? We actually had a preview of that too.

I joined three serious photographer friends for a few hours of photography Saturday morning. Parts of the lake had fog as seen above, but there was little in Sunapee Harbor — until it slowly built up to a crescendo.

The image below is a 10-shot panorama. If you click the image or HERE you will be taken to a page where you can zoom in and explore the harbor in detail.  Can you find a photographer carrying a tripod over her shoulder?

The fog started to build in the harbor.

Down along the Sugar River the fog added a nice softness to the scene.

As we started to make our way to the falls, there was a short-lived burst of drama in the sky above the harbor.

I left the others to work the upper and lower parts of the series of falls and concentrated for a bit on the middle.

But then I noticed some very nice backlight on the fog above me so I moved uphill to get this photo.

I wasn’t tall enough to see over the old stone dam so I carefully crossed the river and scrambled onto the dam to get this shot.

The photo below shows the smooth fan below the other falls. There is easy access from the other side and great places to sit on the ledge. Sure enough, a young woman came and did just that. She saw we were making photos but seemed unconcerned by our presence. I welcomed hers and made some photos using her as a distant subject.

The image below is one of those I made with her in the image. If you click the image or HERE you will be taken to the page where you can zoom in and explore the scene in detail.

Looking upstream from the previous image, the old Hames factory building can be seen. A hame, made of wood or metal, is the curved part of a harness that fits around the neck of a draft animal and to which the traces (or lines) are attached. If you click the image or HERE you will be taken to the same page you probably already visited where you can zoom in and explore the scene in detail.

Below are two similar images. I prefer the second with the young woman adding a point of interest.

It was a wonderful way to spend two hours. Here are a few more photos I took.
