Nepal — People and Places

The photos I took during the first of my four trips to Nepal will be on display in the Ledyard Gallery of the Howe Library in Hanover, NH during June and July.

We flew into Lukla at 9200 feet, often cited as the most dangerous airport in the world.  But instead of heading north toward Mount Everest as most trekkers do, we headed south and west. Our objective was to distribute 200 pounds of donated fleece jackets to school children in the mountains of the Solukhumbu region.  We carried the jackets onto the airplanes; porters carried them through the mountains.

My personal goals for the trip were two. First, I wanted to successfully accomplish a grueling trek at high altitude — something I’d never done before. It turned out that the altitude was no problem. We did not actually climb very high on this trek. However, during three subsequent trips to Nepal, we would four times climb to an altitude twice as high as Lukla.

Second, I wanted to photograph the children and adults we met along our trek.  It turned out this was easy because the people were very friendly and willing to be photographed. I have included many photos of faces in the show.

100% of the proceeds from the sale of the framed prints on display will be donated to The Haven.
