Species of the Pantanal

I spent about two marvelous weeks late June and early July 2024 in the Pantanal of Brazil.  It was a nature photo tour lead by an excellent photographer and a superb local guide.  There were six of us with them.

I have published a page with one photo (and in a few cases several photos) of each of the many species of birds and other animals I was able to photograph.  You can get to that page if you CLICK HERE.

In this blog I give a short preview of what you will find on that page.

We saw many jaguars including a very unusual siting of a family of three.

And a tiny ocelot, 1/10 the weight of a jaguar.

We saw the largest rodent in the world, the capybara.

And a huge Brazilian tapir in a river.

We saw many birds.  One of the most striking was the Sunbittern when its wings were spread.

And beautiful Hyacinth Macaws, the largest species of macaw.

The Toco Toucan is a wonderful and colorful bird.

There were four species of kingfishers.  Here is the Ringed Kingfisher with a fish.

There were many species of flycatchers. The Common Tody-flycatcher was anything but common.

We saw many raptors.  My favorites were tiny Burrowing Owls …

… and Black-collared Hawks.

And of course there were many caimans.  They looked fierce, but apparently they are not that dangerous.
