Walk into the Sunset, Many Year Later

In the previous blog I posted a photo of a sunrise and another of a sunset.  A person contacted me through this web site saying she liked the sunset photo and that it reminded her of Maxfield Parrish. Here is the photo I had posted.

I’m sure she was thinking of “Daybreak”, which is regarded as the most popular art print of the 20th century. It is shown below.

Her comments got me thinking. I decided to play around using one of my very favorite photos.  I took it many years ago on a hike up to Bunker Place in New London. The photo shows our younger daughter hiking with her niece and nephew, our only grandchildren.

It took me years before I figured out why I liked the photo so much. Then I discovered “The Walk to Paradise Garden” photograph by W. Eugene Smith. I must have seen it previously, and it made an impression on my subconscious. Here it is. You can see the resemblance.

So as a tribute to Parrish and Smith, I decided to modify my original sunset photo to reflect elements of both of their great works of art. I could call it “A Walk to Paradise Garden at Daybreak”, except they are walking toward a lake and it is at sunset.
