I attended the 20th Annual “Birding with Bill in Boltonville” event Friday morning. It rained the whole time we birded and stopped shortly after we finished.
Bill is Bill Shepard, creator of the Connecticut River Birding Trail maps. Boltonville is part of Newbury, VT. We walked along the Wells River Rail Trail, a beautiful area with lots of diversity.
Bill brought his laptop to demonstrate eBird. It was sheltered from the rain by his hatchback.
Birding in the rain isn’t quite as bad as it sounds. I enjoyed myself and learned a bunch from Bill.
Photography in the rain is quite challenging. I left my “real” camera at home (a DSLR). But I got a few photos of the event and three bird species.
One of the first birds we got a decent look at was a Veery.
Along the trail is a former beaver pond that is slowly filling in.
This is where we found a Green Heron.
Here is Bill wearing several hats — it was not only wet but also cold. Newbury Conservationist Commission Chairman, Michael Thomas is to his right. In yellow is Alice Allen, the event organizer.
Along the trail was a beautiful Chestnut-sided Warbler.
A second Veery posed nicely for a photo while singing its name.
We got to a trail junction and Michael Thomas told us a bit about the area.
I tip my hat to Bill for thanks, even if it is his hat.
I found a fox den a week ago. If you would like to see some photos of cute fox kits please CLICK HERE.
