Mid-November on Lake Sunapee

There were very few other boats on Lake Sunapee November 16 when I took a ride from Burkehaven Harbor to Great Island. Sunapee Harbor was empty, and the docks in Burkehaven and on Great Island had been put to bed for the winter. But a pair of Bald Eagles were fishing, rather successfully, in the waters off Great and Little Islands. Here is a photo from a moving boat of the pair. Note the fish.A week earlier mine was the only boat in Burkehaven Harbor the morning I arrived. The day was absolutely wonderful—no wind and it must have been in the 60s on the island by late morning. Rick at Burkehaven Boatworks still had a spot for me. Here is a 16-shot panorama of what Burkehaven looks like after the season. Because of the very wide view, there is considerable distortion in the photo. Besides the fact that my Whaler looks weird, the two sunlit walls of the Burkehaven boathouse, the one behind the flag in the center and the one to the far right, are actually parallel—they face the same direction!

The morning of the 16th the lake was also mirror still, though the sun was not out. Pulling out of the harbor the reflections were nice. And the lack of sun made the colors more intense than they would have been if the sun was shinning. And crossing to Great Island was a joy.I took a very fast ride around Great Island “chasing” the pair of eagles. But they wanted no part of me—my first few photos were the best. As I circled the island I snapped a few photos of the cabins. Here is a slide show.
