West Lebanon Wetland

The West Lebanon Wetlands are found behind Walmart and Price Chopper off Route 12A in West Lebanon.  While not very attractive — and somehow given the name Cranberry Pond — this site has had some amazing wildlife, including a river otter which once swam in some beautiful reflections. How otter got there, with the Connecticut River beyond many parking lots, is a mystery.

Here is a view across the pond with a juvenile Least Bittern in the middle about to be fed.

From time-to-time numerous species have paid a visit or raised young here.  In fall, the wetlands can shelter many hundreds of Red-winged Blackbirds. Some photos from this spot follow.
