Bear Pond Natural Area

Bear Pond Natural Area is owned and conserved by the Upper Valley Land Trust. It has over 900 acres including 95 acres of peat bog and 65 acres of wetlands at the headwaters of the Mascoma River.  From Route 4 in Canaan take Switch Road 1.4 miles to a left turn into what looks like a driveway.  There is a small parking lot at the end of this short road.

Trail in Bear Pond Natural Area

Bear Pond itself is not easy to find and as you get close the trail can be very wet.  One treks to the pond to see rare plant species rather than birds.

Bear Pond

Avian ecologist Len Reitsma started a continuous population study of Canada Warblers at Bear Pond in 2003.  So many of the Canada Warblers there are wearing “bracelets”.  I feature Canada Warblers here, but there are other species present, of course.
