Philbrick-Cricenti Bog

I have long known this wonderful bog in New London as Cricenti’s Bog. It is along the Newport Road about 0.3 miles west of the Hannaford Supermarket, which was formally Cricenti’s Supermarket. This is one of the best bogs I have ever visited.

The bog is explored by walking on boardwalks except for a few section through the upland woods like this area.

Here is a typical section of boardwalk in the bog.

The bog has Sheep Laurel, a small version of Mountain Laurel.

Also carnivorous Pitcher Plants and tiny Sundews.

Here is a closeup of the sticky “hairs” (mucilaginous glands) of the carnivorous Sundews, one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants.

Below is the flower of a Pitcher Plant.

At the bog it is important to stay on the boardwalk. Now only to avoid harming delicate bog plants but also to avoid sinking under the mat, as one might in some spots out here.

Wonderful birds can be found at the Philbrick-Cricenti Bog. Like this Canada Warbler.

And this Magnolia Warbler.

And Black-and-White Warblers.

And another warbler, the Northern Waterthrush.

And the beautiful White-throated Sparrow.

Here are some other photos from the Philbrick-Cricenti Bog.

In June, a few years ago, I visited this bog with a 50mm lens and an extension tube set and did some macro photograph of the plants. You can see the photos took if you CLICK HERE.
