Tortuguero to Home
This page shows the village of Tortuguero, the few wildlife photos I was able to take after we left the village, and the trip back to New Hampshire.
The first afternoon in Tortuguero I toured the town, and we walked as a group along a path near the beach before returning through town.

When we walked as a group, I was again carrying an Olympus with a long lens and my iPhone. So the non-bird photos were taken with the iPhone held one-handed in my left hand.
There were some well-done wooden sculptures along the path near the beach.

Here is Martha with Gil in the background as we returned through town.

I enjoyed photographing the people we saw as we headed back to our hotel.

I did a self-portrait, sort of.

We found a nut from a lipstick tree and rubbed the red from the seeds on some lips.

There were few opportunities for colorful sunrise or sunsets on this trip. I shot this weak attempt at 5:54 p.m. our first evening.

On our first morning we took a pre-breakfast boat tour. This photo shows the route to the docks.

After the boat ride and breakfast I wandered the town and photographed these scenes.

I also enjoyed photographing these children and others.

A jaguar had apparently walked through wet cement on a piece of the main road.

Stephen and Judy waited with me at the hotel before our afternoon walk through Tortuguero National Park.

That evening we went out after dark with flashlights looking for night reptiles. I took these along the way.

I took many Oropendola photos before breakfast the second (and last) morning. Here are two others I took along the way to their colony.

Shortly after breakfast we headed to the docks.

Our boat was quite full.

Away we went at a fast clip.

We only slowed down once, for a Green Basilisk.

We got our bags and it was back to San Jose.

Gil stopped the van briefly so I could take this photo of a Green Heron out the window.

We stopped for Southern Lapwings.

These photos of a juvenile Red-breasted Meadowlark were taken out Gil’s window when we stopped for a few seconds.

We did get out of the van to get a look at pairs of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and Northern Jacana.

We stopped late morning at a roadside stand that did not look like much.

It looks like even less in the rear where the washroom was located in the yellow structure to the right.

When we returned from the washroom, we found Gil had organized a veritable feast for us. We spent 30 minutes sampling many marvelous and unusual tastes.

These four photos are from this surprising spot.

We were back at the Hotel La Rosa by early afternoon.

We had an early dinner and met at 3 a.m. the next morning to get to the airport in time for our flight to Miami.

Here we are leaving San Jose.

Some of the clouds along the way were worth a photo.

Approaching Miami, a pretty bad airport with long walks between gates.

We landed in Boston early morning and caught our Dartmouth Coach for the ride back to the Upper Valley.

It was a fabulous trip. Thank you, Ted and Gil, and my fellow travelers for making it very enjoyable.
