Base camp was nothing like I imagined. There were tents pitched on every semi-level spot, and ice and rocks sticking up everywhere. It was an incredible place.
Please explore these panoramic images. You can double click to zoom way in and the left mouse to pan around. You can also use the + and – keys to zoom and the arrow keys to scroll. Please wait for the resolution to download.
Nabin KC with Milt and Carolyn Frye are at the far right of this pan. We are preparing to enter base camp which is that disorganized mess of tents to the far left of this pan.
If you zoom into the left part of this image above the frozen lake in the glacier, you will see a flag pole, a yak, and an “Everest Base Camp” sign.
Carolyn made it into this pan twice—once at each side.
Here Milt and Chhongba are surveying base camp and the Khumbu Glacier. If you zoom in it becomes obvious that base camp is not on a level field.
Looking south along the valley of the Khumbu Glacier we can see Thamserku in the far distance in the center of this pan.
