This narrow, compact area is great for launching a canoe or kayak, bird watching, or taking a short and easy hike to waterfalls and a very deep gorge. However, since the Dewey’s Mills Pond has quite a bit of invasive milfoil, the Ottauquechee River is the better spot for boating.
The photo above shows Dewey’s Mills Pond at dawn. The photo below is an overview of the area taken late in the day in December.
There is a flat and scenic out-and-back walk over a man-made dike between the pond and the Ottauquechee River. I normally do not even go the less than a mile to the Dewey’s Mill Pond Dam and Waterfalls. Rather I find many interesting birds to keep my attention well short of there.
Red-wind blackbirds are numerous and easy to see. The male (R) and female (L) look quite different.
Yellow Warblers nest here.
Common Yellowthroat (warblers) are … well, common.
And if you are lucky you might find some Marsh Wrens with their song like the rattling of an old sewing machine.
Here are a few more photos from Dewey’s Landing.
DIRECTIONS: Heading west along Route 4, turn right onto Dewey’s Mills Road which is about 3 miles from Exit 1 of I-89 in Vermont. At the end of this road turn left on Quechee Main Street, and then take an immediate left into the Dewey’s Mills Pond parking lot.
