This must be my fall for weasels. A few weeks ago I discovered a long-tailed weasel changing its summer brown coat to winter white. Today I took a short walk from my home and came upon a mink trying to cross the road. It saw me and scurried back into the roadside woods owned by a very generous and sharing local couple. I followed not expecting to be able to get any photos—I certainly had left my long lens at home. But I found it again, approached slowly, sat down on the shore of a partly frozen wetland, and took a few photo while it tried to figure me out. Eventually it disappeared into a small cave in a tiny island in the minute “pond”. Here it is peeking out of its cave at me—perhaps a temporary home?

It ventured out giving me a good look at its white chin, then went back in and didn’t exit until after I left.

I think I’ll return tomorrow when the light is better and I have a tripod and longer lens.
