Kathmandu

Kathmandu is noisy, polluted, congested, and a whole lot of fun. Streets are filled with motorcycles, bicycles, cars, pedestrians, rickshaws, cows, tut-tuts (three-wheeled buses), pushcarts, and dogs, among other things. Driver honk their horns every few seconds. There are almost no traffic lights. You cross the street by walking slowly and steadily while the vehicles weave around you. Shops are numerous and tiny. People are friendly. I felt safe.

Day one (2008) I quickly shot a row of Rickshaws. Because a number of the images that make up this pan had motorcycles in the way, it took a lot of work to create a reasonable image.

Day two we toured some religious sites including my favorite the beautiful Boudha Stupa. We had a great lunch on a balcony overlooking the stupa with Khari Rinpoche. I took this pan from that balcony. After lunch Rinpoche took us on a tour of a Tibetian Monastery in the complex.

Day one in 2009 I returned to the local outdoor laundry spot that I photographed the year before and shot this pan.
