Iridescent Clouds over Monhegan Community Church

I spent a wonderful 4 days on Monhegan Island in Maine last weekend on a trip organized by the Vermont Center for Ecostudies. The main focus was birds, but on my first evening there, before taking any warbler photos, I saw a spectacular light show from my room at the Monhegan House.  The sky to the west lit up with iridescent clouds near the sun. These are fairly common, but people rarely see them because you have to look almost directly at the sun. Here the sun was partly blocked by the Monhegan Community Church whose top you can see in the photo.

You can read more about cloud iridescence and other interesting phenomena in the sky if you CLICK HERE.

And please stay tuned for more photos from this trip.
